Burns can be painful and are caused by different energies such as electromagnetic, chemical, etc. In older adults, it is seen that smoking is the cause of burn injury, and so is the open flame. As far as children are concerned, scalding is seen as the primary cause of burn injuries.

In Sandy Springs, you can find different places where they provide help in case someone gets a burn injury. Whether it is the older adults or the infants, they are both at risk of getting burn injuries.

In some cases, burns can be severe, and in other cases, they can be mild or moderate levels of burn. It depends on how deep the burn is and how many layers it has crossed in your skin. You might already be aware that there are different layers beneath the skin, such as epidermis, dermis, and subcutis.

The last layer is the deepest one, and it acts as the absorber for shock. Your skin protects you from different things such as light, infections, heat, etc. However, when the burn is severe, it can penetrate the skin and reach the deepest layer or the moderate layer. To know more, click here.

What are the types of burns?

There can be various types of burns, such as thermal-based, chemical, etc. Let us briefly discuss each type:

  • Chemical burns:

When there are solid acids or detergents, they can result in burns. It happens when such vital things come in contact with the skin of the person or the eyes.

  • Thermal burns:

Such burns happen when you come in contact with different heat sources. The temperature of the skin gets high, and the cell tissue dies as a result. Steam, flames, and hot metals are some of the many sources of heat that, when in contact with the skin, result in thermal burns.

  • Electrical burns:

Electrical burns can come from one of two sources, which are Direct Current(DC) or Alternate Current(AC).

  • Radiation burns:

When someone gets exposed to Ultraviolet rays coming from the sun for too long and on a frequent basis, it can result in radiation burns. Another source of radiation is X-rays.

What are the functions performed by the skin?

There are various kinds of things that skin does and acts as a protective layer, and that is how it saves a person from multiple things. Let us look at the various functions performed by the skin:

  • The skin regulates the temperature of the body.
  • Water and fat can be stored in the layer of skin.
  • It is also one of the sensory organs.
  • It helps in preventing water loss.
  • Bacteria cannot enter when the protective layer is there.

What are the various classifications of burns?

There are different degrees of burns: first, second, and third. We classify them based on how deep the burn penetrated the skin:

  • First-degree burn:

In this case, only the epidermis(outermost layer of skin) gets burned. When the burn happens, it can be painful, can be dry, and it may turn red. However, you may not find any blisters.

  • Second-degree burn:

In this type, a second layer, which is the dermis, also gets burned along with the epidermis. You will get a blister, and the area can get swollen and really painful.

  • Third-degree burn:

Both the layers of the dermis and epidermis get destroyed. Even the bones and muscles can get damaged in this case. If that is the scene, you can also call it a Fourth-degree burn. The burned area can turn white. You may not feel anything in that area, either.

Contact a professional to get relief!

It is essential that if you get a burn of any degree, you consult a professional. Professionals can tell you what needs to be done. They can prescribe some medication or something to help you get relief and make it better.
